Study Support TT 2018-2019 (Word doc) [15KB] (opens new window)
In addition to their class work, pupils within the English and Languages curricular area shout be receiving weekly homework which should take up to 1.5 hours per subject (National 5 to Advanced Higher). Homework should be handed in on time to allow feedback to be given. However, you can help them at home by encouraging them to complete the following tasks/use the following.
All Subjects
- Revision of notes — pupils should be reading through their notes regularly and adding to them throughout the year
- Past papers — these can be collected from their class teacher or found online
- Organisation of notes throughout the year
- Study Support — pupils all have a timetable of study support sessions on offer
English
- All pupils have access to Scholar an online resource created by Heriot Watt University to support learning. The website has multiple activities that pupils can use for revision and their class teacher will receive a report showing what they have completed and how they have performed.
- Students should be regularly reading over their notes on the texts studied in class.
- Read at home — pupils in the Senior Phase should read at home to broaden their general knowledge and expand their vocabulary. Online articles from the opinion pages of newspapers like The Herald, The Scotsman, The Guardian etc are ideal for this.
For Senior Phase Students
- Students should read over and revise the resources provided on Glow via Microsoft Teams from their class teacher. The Microsoft Teams App is also available for PC, Android and iOS devices.
- Students should be completing past papers and using the marking instructions to assess the quality of their own work. Past papers can be found on the SQA website (opens new window).
- Using the SQA Understanding Standards website (opens new window) to look over examples of high quality coursework and exam responses along with the explanations of their marks.
- Between August and March students will have Folio Coursework in the form of written essays that should be worked on outside of school. The folio is worth 30% of their overall mark and it is therefore vital that it reflects their best work.
- Masterclass — available for Higher. Pupils have all received a letter outlining the sessions and the dates.
Media
- Pupils should be revising all of their key aspects of media and re-watch some of the texts if at all possible.
- Work on the media assignment — planning should be complete by the 30th November, production by the 8th January and completion in entirety by the 31th January.
- We will offer lunchtime revision classes before the prelim and the final exam — dates to follow.
