Mitsubishi Challenge
Developing young people's skills for life, learning and work through all aspects of Curriculum for Excellence with real and relevant experiences is the main aim of the Mitsubishi Challenge.
Working in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric and West Lothian Chamber of Commerce the "Pump it up" challenge is designed to bring closer together industry and schools within West Lothian.
The challenge enables our students through inter disciplinary learning in Science and Technology to develop a better understanding of the Science and Technology involved in "green" energy. The students work in a group to create a design solution to a green energy problem.
In May 2014 this challenge was piloted with S3 in Armadale Academy. The challenge, for students, was to create, develop and design a use for a "heat pump". Groups of up to 5 pupils worked successfully together to discuss, plan, organise and use problem solving strategies to develop their designs. Students really engaged in this activity and the creativity and imagination was outstanding.
Four finalist groups were invited to Mitsubishi Electrical at Livingston to present their ideas to Mr Yabu the President of Mitsubishi Electrical.
The overall winners were Sophie Hamilton, Shannon Hoey, Erica Currie and Lisa Anderson with their Air-conditioned Mattress idea.
Thank you to Mitsubishi for their support with this project.
The pilot is being rolled out to all West Lothian secondary schools for 2015.
